Even if you’re not a big reader you’ll inevitably have books to store: Cookbooks, kids books, phone books, and the dictionary. They have to go somewhere. For those who love books and have many, a library is the perfect option. Here is a list of things to consider when planning a library for your home.

Size

First determine how big your space will need to be to comfortably house all your books and still have room to grow. For the occasional reader without a large book collection, a small niche with a unique bookcase, a lamp, a comfortable chair, and ottoman might be enough library space. If you desire a true home library with a massive book collections, more planning will be necessary.

Preservation

These are all things that must be considered before the first shelf is installed so you end up with a space perfect for preserving your books.

– Books should be kept in temperatures between 60 and 70, with proper humidity. This may require some dehumidifying in the summer and humidifying in the winter.

– Consider placement and location because natural light will bleach the books. Protect books by keeping draperies pulled when the natural lighting doesn’t need to be used.

– Mold, mildew, and pests are books biggest threats. You will want a method to keep pests away, either by the type of wood used to build shelves or pre-treatment.

– Dust attracts pests and mold so it is important to create a clean air environment and dust regularly.

Design

You have complete creative control over what you want your library to look like. You can go old world traditional with dark woods, deep leather seats, and heavy drapes. Or go modern by choosing very sleek, minimalist furnishings and shelving designs. You’re limited only by your imagination. Recessed or built-in bookshelves will provide a completely different look from freestanding bookshelves.

If a library is out of the question because of the small space, be creative. If you have a hallway that is decently wide, consider finding custom-sized bookcases to line the hallways between doorways. Above doorways and windows are good places to put a floating shelf. Hanging bookshelves can be installed most anywhere. Any nook or cranny that is bare is an opportunity to install a creative bookshelf.

Reading draws the reader into a story of another time and place. However, the library you create for yourself is going to be so special you will have to stop reading every few pages just so you can admire your space one more time.

Why not?
